[Vidura:] "And how Bhima goes -- hear that from me as I tell it. 'There is none equal to the strength of my arms,' O bull of the Bharatas -- thinking thus, spreading his arms wide, Bhima goes, displaying his arms, proud of the wealth of his arms. Pointing out the fall of his arrows, the son of Kunti, Arjuna, scattering sand, Savyasachi follows the king: as his sand is now scattered unbound, O Bharata, so unchecked will he pour showers of arrows upon the enemies."

The gestures of the two warriors are their vows, made manifest in flesh: Bhima's outstretched arms are a pledge of the might to come, Arjuna's scattered sand an image of the countless arrows that will fall upon the enemies. Thus those silenced in the assembly proclaim the future through their very bodies, and their omen is firmer than an oath. It is telling that Bhima calls his might a wealth of arms: the true possession of a warrior lies not in gold that can be taken away, but in inalienable strength and valor. The verse teaches that with the righteous even a gesture prophesies; that one who has taken away gold has not taken away strength and resolve; and that a vow inscribed by a gesture in the hour of humiliation is a seed of retribution that will in its season rise as an unstoppable downpour.
