युधिष्ठिर उवाच
धन्या वयं यद् अस्माकं स्नेहकारुण्ययन्त्रिताः ॥
असतो ऽपि गुणान् आहुर् ब्राह्मणप्रमुखाः प्रजाः ॥
तद् अहं भ्रातृसहितः सर्वान् विज्ञापयामि वः ॥
नान्यथा तद् धि कर्तव्यम् अस्मत्स्नेहानुकम्पया ॥
भीष्मः पितामहो राजा विदुरो जननी च मे ॥
सुहृज्जनश् च प्रायो मे नगरे नागसाह्वये ॥
ते त्व् अस्मद्धितकामार्थं पालनीयाः प्रयत्नतः ॥
युष्माभिः सहितैः सर्वैः शोकसंतापविह्वलाः ॥
निवर्ततागता दूरं समागमनशापिताः ॥
स्वजने न्यासभूते मे कार्या स्नेहान्विता मतिः ॥
एतद् धि मम कार्याणां परमं हृदि संस्थितम् ॥
सुकृतानेन मे तुष्टिः सत्कारश् च भविष्यति ॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
dhanyā vayaṃ yad asmākaṃ snehakāruṇyayantritāḥ ||
asato 'pi guṇān āhur brāhmaṇapramukhāḥ prajāḥ ||
tad ahaṃ bhrātṛsahitaḥ sarvān vijñāpayāmi vaḥ ||
nānyathā tad dhi kartavyam asmatsnehānukampayā ||
bhīṣmaḥ pitāmaho rājā viduro jananī ca me ||
suhṛjjanaś ca prāyo me nagare nāgasāhvaye ||
te tv asmaddhitakāmārthaṃ pālanīyāḥ prayatnataḥ ||
yuṣmābhiḥ sahitaiḥ sarvaiḥ śokasaṃtāpavihvalāḥ ||
nivartatāgatā dūraṃ samāgamanaśāpitāḥ ||
svajane nyāsabhūte me kāryā snehānvitā matiḥ ||
etad dhi mama kāryāṇāṃ paramaṃ hṛdi saṃsthitam ||
sukṛtānena me tuṣṭiḥ satkāraś ca bhaviṣyati ||
Yudhishthira said: "We are blessed, since out of love and compassion for us the brahmins and citizens speak good of us even where such qualities may not be. Yet I, together with my brothers, ask this of all of you: out of love and compassion for us, do just this and nothing else. In the city of Hastinapura remain my grandfather Bhishma, the king, Vidura, my mother, and nearly all our kinsfolk. They wish us well, but now they are overwhelmed by grief and the heat of suffering; you must all carefully protect them. Turn back — you have already come far. Let your loving mind be turned toward my kinsfolk, whom I leave in your trust as a sacred charge. This is the foremost of my concerns, set deep in my heart; by this good deed you will grant me satisfaction and true honor."
