In this hymn the Sun is called Surya, Aryaman, Bhaga, Tvashtar, Pushan, Arka, Savitar, Ravi, the Ray-bearer, the Unborn, Time, Death, the Ordainer, and the Light-maker. He is named earth, waters, fire, space, wind, and the highest refuge; the Moon, Brihaspati, Shukra, Budha, Angaraka, Indra, Vivasvan, the radiant-rayed one, the pure one, Shauri, and Shanaishchara; Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Skanda, Vaishravana, and Yama; lightning, the fire of digestion and the fire of wood, the lord of radiances, the banner of dharma, the maker of the Vedas, the limb of the Vedas, and the bearer of the Vedas. He is Krita, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali, the refuge of the immortals, the measure of time — kala, kashtha, muhurta, the fortnights, the months, and the seasons; the maker of the year, the ashvattha tree, the wheel of time, Vibhavasu, the eternal Purusha, the yogin, the manifest and the unmanifest, the ancient origin. He is the overseer of the worlds and of beings, Vishvakarman, the dispeller of darkness, Varuna, the ocean, the ray, the cloud, life, and the slayer of enemies; the refuge of beings, the lord of beings, honored by all beings, the jewel, gold, the origin of beings, the granter of desires, and the one who faces every direction. He is victory, vastness, the bestower of boons, the swift-moving one, the sustainer of the breath of life, Dhanvantari, the smoke-bannered one, the primeval god and the son of Aditi; the twelve-formed, the lotus-eyed, father, mother, and grandfather, the gate of heaven, the gate of creatures, the gate of liberation, and the heavenly world itself. He is the maker of the body, the tranquil soul, the soul of the universe facing every direction, the soul of the moving and the unmoving, the subtle soul, clothed in a form of friendliness. These sacred hundred and eight names of the great Sun, worthy of praise, were spoken by the great Indra. From Indra, Narada received them, then Dhaumya, and from Dhaumya, Yudhishthira — and so he obtained all his desired wishes.

The hymn gathers into the image of the Sun a multitude of functions: time, food, health, the Vedas, the gods, the elements, and liberation. This is not a mere listing of names but a contemplation of a single sustaining principle through which the world receives order and life.
