Dhritarashtra said: "Suta, I have heard in full of the deed of the wise Partha; do you know it exactly? My son, reckless, base, of sinful resolve, will destroy the earth. That great-souled Yudhishthira's speech is truthful even in private life, and his warrior is Dhananjaya; to him even sovereignty over the three worlds could belong. Who would stand before Arjuna as he looses sharp barbed shafts? My wicked sons are already in the grip of death, since war awaits them with the unassailable Pandavas. I see no charioteer who could stand against the bearer of the Gandiva in battle. If Drona, Karna, or even Bhishma should go forth to fight, great would be the doubt, yet I do not see our victory. Karna is compassionate and careless; the teacher is old. But Partha is wrathful, strong, fierce, and firm in valor. Truly, peace will come only with their death, or with the death of Phalguna. But there is no slayer of Arjuna, nor does a conqueror of him exist. He satisfied Agni at Khandava and conquered all the kings at the great Rajasuya sacrifice. The thunderbolt, falling upon a mountain, may leave something remaining, but the arrows loosed by Kiritin will leave nothing at all. Just as the sun's rays scorch all that moves and does not move, so the arrows released from Partha's arms will scorch my sons. Perhaps, terrified even by the very sound of Savyasachin's chariot, the whole army of Bharata will seem shattered on every side. When Kiritin stands in battle scattering and casting forth his arrows, armed and ready, he will be like the all-consuming Death set loose by the Creator, and just as inescapable."

Dhritarashtra sees the truth, but too late and without the strength to act upon it. His fear is knowledge of dharma without the resolve to defend it.
