Vaishampayana said: 'Seeing all the Pandavas troubled and sorrowful, Dhaumya, equal to Brihaspati, began to console them: "Listen, O king, to the sacred hermitages approved by the brahmins, to the quarters of the world, the sacred fords, and the mountains. First I shall recount to you the eastern quarter, delightful and served by royal seers. There lies Naimisha, where the gods' holy fords are found, and the blessed Gomati, frequented by divine seers; there is the land of the gods' sacrifices and the sacrificial ground of Vivasvat. There too is the sacred mountain Gaya, honored by royal seers, and the blessed Brahmasara, served by gods and seers. For this reason the ancients say: let a man wish for many sons, if even one of them will go to Gaya. There is the Mahanadi, and likewise Gayashira and the imperishable banyan, where food offered to the ancestors becomes inexhaustible. There is the Phalgu, a sacred river of pure waters, and the Kaushiki, rich in roots and fruits, where the ascetic Vishvamitra attained brahminhood. There is the sacred Ganga, on whose banks Bhagiratha performed many sacrifices with abundant gifts."'

Dhaumya begins not with flight from grief but with the memory of places where others have already transformed their fate. This is the meaning of pilgrimage: to walk in the footsteps of those who found the highest refuge.
