Dhaumya said: 'Now, tiger among kings, I will name for you the sacred sites of the northern quarter. There flows the holy, blessing Sarasvati, lake-fed and garlanded with forests, and the great, swift Yamuna, running on to the ocean. There lies the most sacred spot, Plakshavatarana, where the Sarasvatas, having performed sacrifice, go to the concluding bath. There is the auspicious Agnishira, where Sahadeva performed sacrifice at the throw of the shamya twig; of it a song of Indra circulates among the twice-born. Sahadeva laid out along the Yamuna hundreds of thousands of fires with magnificent gifts. There, too, the great emperor Bharata, of vast renown, offered twenty-seven and eight horse sacrifices. There is known the exceedingly holy hermitage of Saraka, which fulfilled the desires of the twice-born. The Sarasvati is constantly honored by the virtuous; there the Valakhilyas and the seers performed sacrifices of old. The Drishadvati too is renowned as most holy; there Vaivarnya and Varna, knowers of the Veda and known through the Veda, constantly performed sacred rites. At Vishakhayupa the gods, together with Indra and Varuna, gathered many times of old and performed austerities; therefore that place is especially sacred.'

The north opens with rivers of knowledge and sacrifice. The memory of kings and sages here shows that power and wisdom must converge in service to dharma.
