Vaishampayana said: 'When the Pandava had resolved to go, Lomasha said to him: "Become light, great king; being light, you will be able to travel freely." Yudhishthira said: "Let those brahmins and yatis who live on alms, and those townspeople who came out of devotion to the king, turn back. Let them go to the great King Dhritarashtra: he will give each of them their due maintenance in due time. But if the lord of men does not give the proper maintenance, then for the sake of our love and welfare the king of the Panchalas will give it to you." Then most of the townspeople, burdened with heavy loads, together with the brahmins and diligent yatis, set out for Nagapura. The son of Ambika, the king, received them all with love for the sake of the Dharma-king, as was fitting, and gratified them with wealth. And the king, the son of Kunti, together with the lightly-provisioned brahmins and the well-pleased Lomasha, dwelt three nights in Kamyaka.'

Before the sacred journey, Yudhishthira takes care of those who will not be able to go on. True renunciation does not abandon those who depend on it, but settles their lives before continuing its own vow.
