इल्वलस् तान् विदित्वा तु महर्षिसहितान् नृपान् ॥
उपस्थितान् सहामात्यो विषयान्ते ऽभ्यपूजयत् ॥
तेषां ततो ऽसुरश्रेष्ठ आतिथ्यम् अकरोत् तदा ॥
स संस्कृतेन कौरव्य भ्रात्रा वातापिना किल ॥
ततो राजर्षयः सर्वे विषण्णा गतचेतसः ॥
वातापिं संस्कृतं दृष्ट्वा मेषभूतं महासुरम् ॥
अथाब्रवीद् अगस्त्यस् तान् राजर्षीन् ऋषिसत्तमः ॥
विषादो वो न कर्तव्यो अहं भोक्ष्ये महासुरम् ॥
धुर्यासनम् अथासाद्य निषसाद महामुनिः ॥
तं पर्यवेषद् दैत्येन्द्र इल्वलः प्रहसन्न् इव ॥
अगस्त्य एव कृत्स्नं तु वातापिं बुभुजे ततः ॥
भुक्तवत्य् असुरो ऽऽह्वानम् अकरोत् तस्य इल्वलः ॥
ततो वायुः प्रादुरभूद् अगस्त्यस्य महात्मनः ॥

अनुवाद

Lomasha said: 'Ilvala, learning that the kings had come to him together with the great sage, went out with his ministers to the border of his realm and honored them. Then the best of the asuras offered them hospitality — with, as they say, his own brother Vatapi, prepared as food. All the royal sages, seeing the great asura prepared in the form of a ram, turned pale and lost their presence of mind. Then Agastya, the best of the sages, said to them: "Do not give way to despair. I will eat the great asura." The great sage took the seat of honor, and Ilvala, lord of the daityas, as if smiling, began to serve him. Agastya alone ate the whole of Vatapi. When he had eaten, the asura Ilvala called his brother by name. Then only wind came forth from the great Agastya, and Ilvala grew despondent, seeing that the great asura had been digested.'

भाष्य

Agastya defeats the demon with the very instrument by which he had been killing brahmins. Violence disguised as hospitality is consumed by the power of true tapas.
