Seeing Shakra overtaken by stupor, eternal Vishnu poured his own splendor into him, strengthening his power. When the gods saw Shakra filled with Vishnu's power, they too each poured their own splendor into him; so did the pure brahmarshis. Filled with the strength of Vishnu, the gods, and the great rishis, Shakra became mighty. Knowing that the lord of the thirty gods had gained strength, Vritra let out a great roar; at the sound of it the earth, the quarters, space, the sky, and the mountains all shook. Then great Indra, greatly agitated on hearing that vast and terrible cry, sunk in fear, swiftly released his mighty vajra to slay him, O king. Struck by Shakra's vajra, the great asura, wearer of a golden garland, fell like the great mountain Mandara released from Vishnu's hand. When the foremost of the daityas was slain, Shakra, stricken with fear, fled to enter a lake: he could not believe the vajra had been released from his own hand, and in his terror could not believe that Vritra was slain. All the gods rejoiced and were glad; the great rishis praised Indra; and the gods, gathering swiftly together, slew all the daityas, who were stunned by Vritra's death."

The decisive strength comes from Vishnu: Indra acts, but the very capacity to act is granted from above. Thus the victory belongs not to pride but returns him to dependence on the Lord.
