Struck down then by the thirty gods, they in terror entered the very ocean — immeasurable, full of fish and treasures. Having entered it, they took counsel together, exulting in the thought of destroying the three worlds. Some among them, versed in forming resolutions, proposed various means. In the course of time, as they pondered, a terrible thought arose among them: "Those who possess knowledge and austerity must be destroyed first of all. All the worlds are upheld by austerity. Therefore hasten to destroy austerity. Whoever on earth is an ascetic, one who knows dharma and its truth, must be swiftly slain. When they perish, the world will perish." Thus all of them, their reason lost and rejoicing at the world's destruction, took refuge in the hard-to-reach, greatly wave-tossed ocean, the treasure-house and abode of Varuna."

The Kaleyas understand precisely what upholds the world: not weapons or wealth, but austerity and the knowledge of dharma. Thus their war becomes an assault on the spiritual root of life.
