Lomasha said: 'Having taken refuge in the ocean, the watery treasury of Varuna, the Kaleyas set about destroying the three worlds. At night, enraged, they ceaselessly devoured sages dwelling in ashrams and sacred abodes. In the ashram of Vasishtha these evildoers ate one hundred and eighty-nine ascetics. Coming to the holy ashram of Chyavana, served by the twice-born, they devoured a hundred sages who lived on fruits and roots. Thus they acted by night, and by day they entered the ocean. In the ashram of Bharadvaja twenty brahmacharins observing their vows, who lived on air and water, were slain. Thus, passing from ashram to ashram, the danavas rushed about by night, intoxicated with the strength of their arms and overtaken by time, killing many twice-born. People did not understand who was doing this to the ascetics. In the mornings there were seen on the ground the bodies of dead sages, wasted by their strict diet: emaciated, bloodless, with torn limbs, entrails and joints, they lay in heaps like piles of conch shells. The ground was strewn with scattered vessels, broken sacrificial ladles, and scattered agnihotra fires. The world, deprived of the Vedic recitation and the cry of "vashat", its sacrificial festivals and rites destroyed, became joyless, tormented by fear of the Kaleyas.'

The picture is terrible precisely because not only lives but the very rhythm of the sacred world is destroyed. When those who bear austerity are killed, the very speech of sacrifice falls silent.
