कालेयास् तु यथा राजन् सुरैः सर्वैर् निषूदिताः ॥
अगस्त्याद् वरम् आसाद्य तन् मे निगदतः शृणु ॥
त्रिदशानां वचः श्रुत्वा मैत्रावरुणिर् अब्रवीत् ॥
किमर्थम् अभियाताः स्थ वरं मत्तः किम् इच्छथ ॥
एवम् उक्तास् ततस् तेन देवास् तं मुनिम् अब्रुवन् ॥
एवं त्वयेच्छाम कृतं महर्षे; महार्णवं पीयमानं महात्मन् ॥
ततो वधिष्याम सहानुबन्धान्; कालेयसंज्ञान् सुरविद्विषस् तान् ॥
त्रिदशानां वचः श्रुत्वा तथेति मुनिर् अब्रवीत् ॥
करिष्ये भवतां कामं लोकानां च महत् सुखम् ॥
एवम् उक्त्वा ततो ऽगच्छत् समुद्रं सरितां पतिम् ॥
ऋषिभिश् च तपःसिद्धैः सार्धं देवैश् च सुव्रतः ॥
मनुष्योरगगन्धर्वयक्षकिंपुरुषास् तथा ॥
अनुजग्मुर् महात्मानं द्रष्टुकामास् तद् अद्भुतम् ॥
ततो ऽभ्यगच्छन् सहिताः समुद्रं भीमनिस्वनम् ॥
नृत्यन्तम् इव चोर्मीभिर् वल्गन्तम् इव वायुना ॥
हसन्तम् इव फेनौघैः स्खलन्तं कन्दरेषु च ॥
नानाग्राहसमाकीर्णं नानाद्विजगणायुतम् ॥
अगस्त्यसहिता देवाः सगन्धर्वमहोरगाः ॥
ऋषयश् च महाभागाः समासेदुर् महोदधिम् ॥

अनुवाद

"Now listen, king, how all the gods destroyed the Kaleyas, having received a boon from Agastya. Hearing the word of the thirty gods, Maitravaruni said: 'Why have you come? What boon do you wish from me?' Then the gods answered him: 'This is what we wish you to do, great seer: drink up the great ocean, great soul. Then we shall slay these enemies of the gods, called the Kaleyas, together with their followers.' Hearing the word of the thirty gods, the sage said: 'So be it. I shall fulfill your desire and the great good of the worlds.' Having said this, he who was true to his vows went to the ocean, lord of rivers, together with the seers who had attained perfection through austerity, and with the gods. Humans, nagas, gandharvas, yakshas, and kimpurushas followed the great soul, wishing to see this wonder. All together they came to the ocean with its fearsome roar: it seemed to dance with its waves, to leap under the wind, to laugh with masses of foam and stumble among its hollows, and it was full of various sea monsters and multitudes of birds. The gods together with Agastya, with the gandharvas and the great nagas, and the great and blessed seers, drew near to the great ocean."

Agastya's assent sounds simple, yet behind it stands the scale of cosmic service. True power does not display itself but does what is needed for the good of the worlds.
