लोमश उवाच
समुद्रं स समासाद्य वारुणिर् भगवान् ऋषिः ॥
उवाच सहितान् देवान् ऋषींश् चैव समागतान् ॥
एष लोकहितार्थं वै पिबामि वरुणालयम् ॥
भवद्भिर् यद् अनुष्ठेयं तच् छीघ्रं संविधीयताम् ॥
एतावद् उक्त्वा वचनं मैत्रावरुणिर् अच्युतः ॥
समुद्रम् अपिबत् क्रुद्धः सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः ॥
पीयमानं समुद्रं तु दृष्ट्वा देवाः सवासवाः ॥
विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः स्तुतिभिश् चाप्य् अपूजयन् ॥
त्वं नस् त्राता विधाता च लोकानां लोकभावनः ॥
त्वत्प्रसादात् समुच्छेदं न गच्छेत् सामरं जगत् ॥
संपूज्यमानस् त्रिदशैर् महात्मा; गन्धर्वतूर्येषु नदत्सु सर्वशः ॥
दिव्यैश् च पुष्पैर् अवकीर्यमाणो; महार्णवं निःसलिलं चकार ॥

अनुवाद

Lomasha said: "Coming to the ocean, the blessed sage, son of Varuna, said to the assembled gods and seers: 'For the good of the world, I shall drink the abode of Varuna. Whatever you must do, arrange it quickly.' Having spoken thus, the unshakable Maitravaruni, in wrath, drank the ocean before the eyes of all the world. Seeing the ocean being drunk, the gods headed by Vasava were struck with the highest astonishment and honored him with praises: 'You are our protector and ordainer, the benefactor of the worlds. By your grace, the world together with the immortals shall not come to destruction.' Honored by the thirty gods, while the instruments of the gandharvas resounded on every side and he was showered with divine flowers, the great soul made the great ocean devoid of water."

भाष्य

The drunk-up ocean becomes an image of how austerity (tapas) exposes a hidden calamity. As long as evil hides in the depths, it cannot be overcome; the sage makes it visible.
