Lomasha said: 'Listen attentively, king, to the great deed of this king and to how the name Mandhatri is celebrated in the worlds. King Yuvanashva, descended from the line of Ikshvaku, performed, lord of the earth, sacrifices with abundant gifts. Best among the upholders of dharma, he performed a thousand ashvamedhas and other principal, varied sacrifices with full dakshinas. But this royal sage, great of soul and firm in his vow, was childless; entrusting the kingdom to his ministers, he took to living in the forest. Restraining himself according to the rule set forth in the shastras, with his heart parched by thirst, he entered the ashram of Bhrigu. That very night, king, the great Bhrigunandana was performing an ishti for Saudyumni for the sake of begetting a son. A large vessel, filled with water sanctified by mantras, had already been placed on the vedi by the focused sages. Whichever wife drank it would bear him a son equal to Shakra. Having set the vessel upon the vedi, the maharishis fell asleep, exhausted from their night-long vigil. Saudyumni, passing by them, his throat dry, tormented by thirst, entered the ashram and earnestly asked for water. But no one heard the cry of the weary king with his parched throat; it sounded like the cry of a bird. Then the lord of the earth, seeing the vessel full of water, rushed to it swiftly, drank the water, and emptied it. Having drunk the cool water, the thirst-stricken king, the wise lord of the earth, found relief and became joyful.'

A great destiny begins with a mistake made not out of pride but out of human need. The text thus shows that providence can use even a wrong step, when a person's life already stands within the current of austerity and sacrifice.
