When a hundred years had passed, from the left side of this great king, bursting it open, a son emerged, like a second sun. He came forth of great splendor, and death did not enter into King Yuvanashva; this became a wonder. Then Shakra of great splendor came, wishing to see the child, and placed his index finger in its mouth. 'He will drink of me,' said Vajrin; and the gods together with Indra gave him the name Mandhatri. Having tasted the index finger given by Shakra, the infant grew, king, by thirteen kishkus. The Vedas together with the Dhanurveda, divine weapons and power came to him, great king, the very moment he thought of them. The bow named Ajagava, arrows born of horn, and an impenetrable armor came to him at once. Maghavan himself, Shakra, performed his consecration, O Bharata; and by dharma he conquered the three worlds, like Vishnu with his strides. For the great king the wheel moved unobstructed, and jewels themselves served the royal sage. This earth, full of riches, was his, lord of the earth; he performed many varied sacrifices with generous dakshinas. Of great splendor, having erected sacrificial monuments and attained abundant dharma, he obtained, king, half of Shakra's seat.'

Mandhatri's power is described in almost cosmic terms, but the key word remains 'by dharma.' Conquest of the three worlds has value only when it is like the strides of Vishnu: it establishes order, not personal whim.
