मातलिर् उवाच
आसीद् इदं पुरा पार्थ देवराजस्य नः पुरम् ॥
ततो निवातकवचैर् इतः प्रच्याविताः सुराः ॥
तपस् तप्त्वा महत् तीव्रं प्रसाद्य च पितामहम् ॥
इदं वृतं निवासाय देवेभ्यश् चाभयं युधि ॥
ततः शक्रेण भगवान् स्वयम्भूर् अभिचोदितः ॥
विधत्तां भगवान् अत्रेत्य् आत्मनो हितकाम्यया ॥
तत उक्तो भगवता दिष्टम् अत्रेति वासवः ॥
भवितान्तस् त्वम् एवैषां देहेनान्येन वृत्रहन् ॥
तत एषां वधार्थाय शक्रो ऽस्त्राणि ददौ तव ॥
न हि शक्याः सुरैर् हन्तुं य एते निहतास् त्वया ॥
कालस्य परिणामेन ततस् त्वम् इह भारत ॥
एषाम् अन्तकरः प्राप्तस् तत् त्वया च कृतं तथा ॥
दानवानां विनाशार्थं महास्त्राणां महद् बलम् ॥
ग्राहितस् त्वं महेन्द्रेण पुरुषेन्द्र तद् उत्तमम् ॥
अर्जुन उवाच
ततः प्रविश्य नगरं दानवांश् च निहत्य तान् ॥
पुनर् मातलिना सार्धम् अगच्छं देवसद्म तत् ॥
mātalir uvāca
āsīd idaṃ purā pārtha devarājasya naḥ puram ||
tato nivātakavacair itaḥ pracyāvitāḥ surāḥ ||
tapas taptvā mahat tīvraṃ prasādya ca pitāmaham ||
idaṃ vṛtaṃ nivāsāya devebhyaś cābhayaṃ yudhi ||
tataḥ śakreṇa bhagavān svayambhūr abhicoditaḥ ||
vidhattāṃ bhagavān atrety ātmano hitakāmyayā ||
tata ukto bhagavatā diṣṭam atreti vāsavaḥ ||
bhavitāntas tvam evaiṣāṃ dehenānyena vṛtrahan ||
tata eṣāṃ vadhārthāya śakro 'strāṇi dadau tava ||
na hi śakyāḥ surair hantuṃ ya ete nihatās tvayā ||
kālasya pariṇāmena tatas tvam iha bhārata ||
eṣām antakaraḥ prāptas tat tvayā ca kṛtaṃ tathā ||
dānavānāṃ vināśārthaṃ mahāstrāṇāṃ mahad balam ||
grāhitas tvaṃ mahendreṇa puruṣendra tad uttamam ||
arjuna uvāca
tataḥ praviśya nagaraṃ dānavāṃś ca nihatya tān ||
punar mātalinā sārdham agacchaṃ devasadma tat ||
Mātali said: 'Pārtha, this was formerly our city, the city of the king of gods, but the Nivātakavacas drove the suras out from here. Having performed great and severe austerities and having propitiated Pitāmaha, they obtained it for their dwelling and obtained fearlessness in battle before the gods. Then Śakra, seeking his own benefit, urged the blessed Self-born One: "Let the blessed one ordain what is fitting here." The blessed one said to Vāsava: "It is thus ordained here. You yourself, Vṛtrahan, will become their end, but in another body." Therefore Śakra gave you weapons for their destruction: those whom you have slain could not be slain by the suras. With the passage of Time, you have come here, Bhārata, as their ender, and this is exactly what you have done. For the destruction of the dānavas, Mahendra taught you the great power of the supreme astras, best of men.' Arjuna said: 'Then, having entered the city and slain those dānavas, I returned again together with Mātali to that abode of the gods.'
