'Seeing the dānavas, adorned in heavenly ornaments and shattered by the Raudra astra, the charioteer of the gods was filled with the highest joy. He honored me, having witnessed a deed unbearable even for the gods and hard for them to accomplish. Joining his palms, Mātali said with delight: "You have accomplished a deed beyond the power of suras and asuras; even the lord of the gods could not have done this in battle. This great flying city, invulnerable to suras and asuras, you, O hero, have destroyed by the strength of your own valor, weapons, and austerity." When the city was destroyed and the dānavas slain, all the women ran out wailing. With disheveled hair, distraught, grieving like curlews, they fell to the ground, mourning their sons, fathers, and brothers. Weeping in wretched voices, crying out, having lost their lords, they struck their breasts with their hands; their garlands and ornaments fell loose. That city of the dānavas, joined with grief, stripped of beauty, struck down by suffering and humiliation, without splendor and without lords, no longer shone. Like a city of the gandharvas, a pool without its elephant, or a forest of withered trees, it became almost invisible. And me, joyful at heart, my deed in battle accomplished, Mātali swiftly brought to the abode of the king of the gods.'

The glory of victory stands right beside the weeping. The narrative does not cancel the righteousness of destroying the asuras, but it does not hide the human cost of the city's ruin.
