Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'The third son of Brahmā, O bull of the Kuru race, had Apā for his wife; hear now of his offspring. There were Bṛhajjyotis, Bṛhatkīrti, Bṛhadbrahmā, Bṛhanmanas, Bṛhanmantra, Bṛhadbhāsa, and, O king, Bṛhaspati. Among all his daughters, the first, unmatched in beauty, was the goddess Bhānumatī. The second daughter of Aṅgiras was called Rāgā, because in her arose the attachment (rāga) of all beings. The third, whom embodied beings call the visible-and-invisible daughter of Kapardin, is called Sinīvālī on account of her slenderness. There was also the pious Haviṣmatī, who perceives through radiance and is bound to the oblations. The seventh daughter of Aṅgiras, renowned as Mahāmatī, great in wisdom, is celebrated amid the great blazing sacrifices. And she, the blessed one, at whose sight people cry out 'kuhu, kuhu,' is called Kuhū, Ekānaṃśā, the daughter of Aṅgiras.'

The names of Aṅgiras's daughters are bound up with light, oblation, subtlety, and the lunar-sacrificial cycle of time. Through them the fiery lineage enters into the rhythm of ritual.
