ज्ञात्वा प्रथमजं तं तु वह्नेर् आङ्गिरसं सुतम् ॥
उपेत्य देवाः पप्रच्छुः कारणं तत्र भारत ॥
स तु पृष्टस् तदा देवैस् ततः कारणम् अब्रवीत् ॥
प्रत्यगृह्णंस् तु देवाश् च तद् वचो ऽङ्गिरसस् तदा ॥
अत्र नानाविधान् अग्नीन् प्रवक्ष्यामि महाप्रभान् ॥
कर्मभिर् बहुभिः ख्यातान् नानात्वं ब्राह्मणेष्व् इह ॥

The gods, having recognized in Angiras the firstborn son of fire, came and asked him the reason. He explained it to them, and the gods accepted his word. Markandeya said: "Now I will tell of the various great fires, known through their many functions and their different names among the brahmanas."

भाष्य

Thus begins the catalogue of fires: not a dry genealogy, but a map of sacrificial functions through which the one Agni enters into a multitude of rites.
