He created five stealers of sacrifice: Abhima, Atibhima, Bhima, Bhimabala, and Abala; then Sumitra, Mitravanta, Mitrajna, Mitravardhana, and Mitradharman; then Surapravira, Vira, Sukesha, Suvarchas, and the slayer of the suras. These fifteen stand in three groups of five and steal the fruit of sacrifice from those who offer sacrifices from a heavenly station; on earth they carry off and strike down great things, rivaling the havyavahana fires. Therefore the skilled established the taking of the havis upon the vedi: there they do not approach if Agni stands present. Agni, once kindled, bears the sacrifice and drives them off with his wings; pacified by mantras, they do not steal the sacrificial ishti. The son of Brihaduktha-tapas, bound to the earth, is honored by the good on earth in the agnihotra. Rathantara, the son of Tapas, is called a fire; the adhvaryus know his havis for Mitravinda. Together with these radiant sons, the greatly glorious Panchajanya rejoiced in supreme delight.

Even the sacrifice needs protection from forces that would steal it. Agni and the mantra render the offering unstealable, returning it to its rightful recipient.
