When the gods heard of Skanda, they said to Vasava, 'Quickly slay Skanda, his strength is unbearable. If you do not kill him today, he will become Indra, and will subdue the three worlds, us, and you.' Indra was troubled: 'He is but a child, yet his strength is immense; in battle he could destroy even the creator of the worlds.' Then the gods resolved, 'Let all the mothers of the world go to Skanda and, being free to act as their desire moves them, kill him.' The mothers went, but seeing his irresistible strength, their faces fell, and they thought, 'He cannot be conquered,' and themselves took refuge in him. They said, 'You are our son; through us the world is sustained; accept all of us — our breasts have flowed with milk out of love.' Mahasena honored them and granted them the boons they desired, and then saw Agni, his father, approaching. Agni, honored by him, together with the host of mothers, surrounded Mahasena and stood firmly guarding him. Among the mothers, the woman born of wrath, spear in hand, guarded Skanda like a nurse, as her own son; the fierce daughter of the Red Ocean, who feeds on red, embraced and guarded Mahasena as her son. And Naigameya, goat-faced, of abundant progeny, having become Agni, amused the child on the mountain as though with toys.

Those who were sent to destroy Skanda become his mothers. The strength of the Lord's servant not only overcomes enemies but turns a threat itself into protection.
