Seeing the gods who had come to kill him, the son of Pavaka grew enraged and released from his mouth tongues of flame that had swelled immense. They burned the armies of the gods, writhing upon the ground. With heads, bodies, weapons and mounts ablaze, they fell and shone like many-colored stars. Burning, they took refuge with the son of Pavaka and, forsaking Vajradhara, came to peace. Then, forsaken by the gods, Indra hurled his vajra at Skanda. It swiftly struck Skanda's right side and split it open. From the blow of the vajra another youth arose from Skanda, young, clad in golden armor, bearing a shakti and wearing divine earrings; because he was born from the entry of the vajra, he was named Vishakha. Seeing this other one thus born, blazing like the fire at the end of time, Indra in fear folded his hands and took refuge with Skanda. Skanda granted safety to him and his army, and the joyful gods struck up their instruments.

Indra's blow does not destroy Skanda but reveals a new form of his power - Vishakha. Thus a hostile strike becomes part of the divine manifestation.
