The Mothers said: "Let us be the highest mothers of the whole world, and honored by your grace. Grant us this favor." Skanda answered: "So be it. Become manifold -- both inauspicious and auspicious." Then the throng of mothers, resolving to accept Skanda as their son, came forth: Kaki, Halima, Rudra, Brihali, Arya, Palala, and Mitra -- these seven are called the mothers of infants. Their mighty son, the terrible red-eyed Shishu, was born by Skanda's grace. This eightfold circle, together with the goat-faced one, is called the ninefold group. Know the sixth, goat-faced countenance as the face of Skanda himself; it is innermost among his six heads and is always honored by the throng of mothers. The foremost of his six heads is called Bhadrashakha, because through it he released the divine shakti. All this manifold event took place on the fifth bright night, and the terrible battle, O lord of men, took place on the sixth."

The fifth and sixth nights receive a mythic foundation: the appearance of the mothers and Skanda's battle. The festival calendar is rooted in the event of the world's protection.
