Skanda sat in golden armor and garland, with a golden tuft and crown, with golden eyes, in red garments, with sharp fangs, beautiful, endowed with all marks and dear to the three worlds. Then embodied Shri, lotus-formed, herself accepted this young hero-giver of boons. Joined with Shri, the great-glory Kumara shone among beings like the full moon. The great brahmins honored him, and the sages said: "Golden one, blessing be upon you; be the bringer of good to the worlds. In six nights after your birth you subdued all the worlds and gave them safety once more. Therefore be Indra, the granter of fearlessness to the three worlds." Skanda asked: "What does Indra do for all the worlds, O men of austerity? How does he ever protect the hosts of gods?" The sages answered: "Indra grants beings strength, splendor, offspring, and happiness, and when pleased, he grants all portions. He destroys the wicked and rewards those who stand in righteousness; Balasudana instructs beings in their tasks. Where there is no sun, he becomes the sun; where there is no moon, the moon; for reasons of his own he becomes fire, wind, earth, and waters. Such is Indra's office, and in Indra there is vast strength. And you, hero, foremost in strength, therefore be our Indra."

Skanda is offered the highest authority, but first he asks what that office entails. Authority is understood as protection, the distribution of strength, and the sustaining of the cosmos.
