The golden parasol held over him shone like the orb of a well-kindled fire. The divine golden garland, made by Vishvakarman, was placed upon him by the glorious Tripuraghna himself. The blessed Govrishadhvaja came together with the goddess and honored him with great joy. The brahmins call him Rudra and Agni; therefore he is the son of Rudra. The seed poured forth by Rudra became Mount Shveta; the power of Pavaka on that white mountain was joined to the Krittikas. Rudra entered Vahni, and there this child was born; therefore Skanda became the son of Rudra. From the power of Rudra, Vahni, Svaha, and the six wives was born Skanda, foremost among the gods. Clad in red garments, his body radiant, he blazed like the sun amid red clouds. The cock given by Agni became his adorned banner, raised upon his chariot, red as the fire of time. His innate armor entered his body and ever manifests when the god goes to battle. Shakti, armor, strength, splendor, beauty, truth, invulnerability, devotion to brahmins, clarity, protection of devotees, destruction of enemies, and protection of the worlds -- all these were born together with Skanda. Thus, consecrated by all the gods and adorned, he shone joyful, like the full moon, amid the longed-for sounds of Vedic recitation, the instruments of the gods, the songs of the gandharvas, and the hosts of apsaras. The celestials beheld the consecrated Mahasena as though it were the rising sun that had dispelled the darkness.

Skanda's origin draws together many sources: Rudra, Agni, Svaha, the Krittikas, and the sages' wives. This is not a contradiction but a sign that he gathers different powers into a single mission of protection.
