Then Markandeya named the grahas: Vinata is known as the terrible Shakunigraha; Putana is a rakshasi, known as Putanagraha; the terrible night-wandering Pishachi is called Shitaputana and steals the unborn children of human women; Aditi is called Revati, and her graha is Raivata, who likewise afflicts children; Diti, the mother of the daityas, is called Mukhamandika, hard to approach and delighting in the flesh of infants. The kumaras and kumaris born of Skanda are also great grahas who devour the unborn. Surabhi, the mother of cows, and Sarama, the mother of dogs, are likewise bound up with dangers to children and to the unborn. The mother of trees, who dwells in the karanja, is honored there by people desiring children. Lohitayani, daughter of the Red Ocean and nurse of Skanda, is honored in the kadamba. As Rudra is among men, so is Arya among women; Arya, the mother of Kumara, is worshipped for various desires. Thus have I told of the great grahas of the Kumaras: until sixteen years they are inauspicious, and thereafter auspicious. All the mothers named, and the male grahas as well, are known to embodied beings as Skandagrahas. Their appeasement must be performed with bathing, incense, ointment, the rite of offering, and gifts, and especially by the worship of Skanda. Thus honored and rightly saluted, they grant people well-being, life, and strength.'

The catalog of grahas may look forbidding, but its purpose is practical: to name the danger and to give a means of appeasing it through the worship of Skanda.
