Then Prajāpati Brahmā said to Mahāsena: "Go to Mahādeva, your father, the destroyer of Tripura. Rudra, entering Agni, and Umā, entering Svāhā, for the good of all the worlds gave birth to you, the invincible one. The seed poured by the great Rudra into the womb of Umā lies upon the mountain, where it fell as Miñjikā-miñjika. The remainder of the seed fell into the Red Ocean, part upon the sun's rays, part upon the earth, part clung to the trees. Thus it fell in five ways. Know these fearsome hosts of varied form, who feed on flesh, as your attendants." Mahāsena said to Maheśvara: "So be it," and, as a son devoted to his father, honored his immeasurable father. These five hosts should be honored with arka flowers by those who desire wealth; their worship is also performed for the pacification of illness. Miñjikā-miñjika, the pair born of Rudra, is always worthy of homage from one who desires the welfare of children. The women who feed on human flesh, called Vṛddhikās by name, were born on trees; they are to be honored by those who desire progeny.

Skanda is recognized as Rudra's son not only in might but in mission: these fearsome hosts receive a place in the guarding and pacifying of the world.
