'I do not outdo my husbands in clothing, food, or ornaments, and I do not criticize my mother-in-law; I always keep myself in check. Because of my attentiveness, my constant early rising, and my service to my elders, my husbands are well disposed toward me. To noble Kunti, who bore heroes and speaks the truth, I alone attend with bathing, clothing, and food. I never outdo her in garments, ornaments, or food, and I do not criticize Pritha, who is equal to the earth. In earlier times, eight thousand brahmins ate daily in Yudhishthira's house from golden vessels; eighty-eight thousand snatakas, householders, each maintained with thirty serving women, were supported by Yudhishthira; and another ten thousand yatis, keepers of celibacy, received well-prepared food in golden vessels. All these brahmins, expounders of Brahman, I honored as was fitting with drink, clothing, and food. The great son of Kunti had a hundred thousand serving women with bracelets and necklaces, adorned, wearing costly garlands, golden-hued, anointed with sandal, skilled in dance and song; I knew the name, appearance, food, clothing, and the deeds done and undone of each of them. Another hundred thousand serving women of the wise son of Kunti, vessels in hand, fed the guests day and night. A hundred thousand horses and ten thousand elephants attended Yudhishthira, who dwelt in Indraprastha. While he ruled the earth, I knew the count and order of all this; I knew what was done and undone by all the inner chambers and all the servants, down to the cowherds and shepherds. I alone, fair one, knew the entire income and expenditure of the glorious Pandavas. Having laid the whole household upon me, the bulls among the Bharatas were free to devote themselves to their duties; and I, giving up every comfort, bore this heavy burden day and night, a burden beyond the reach of the wicked. Like the ocean, full of Varuna's treasures, I alone knew the treasury of my husbands, and night and day were equal to me while I gladdened them, with hunger and thirst as my only companions. I am the first to wake and the last to lie down; this, Satya, is my constant means of binding their affection. This is the great means I know for holding one's husbands; the conduct of dishonest women I neither practice nor desire.'

In Draupadi, the devoted wife and the manager of the royal household are joined as one. Her faithfulness is not passive: it is memory, labor, accounting, and the capacity to bear responsibility.
