युधिष्ठिर उवाच
एवम् एतन् महाबाहो यथा स भगवान् प्रभुः ॥
अब्रवीत् सर्वभूतेशस् तत् तथा न तद् अन्यथा ॥
अवश्यं त्व् एव वासार्थं रमणीयं शिवं सुखम् ॥
संमन्त्र्य सहितैः सर्वैर् द्रष्टव्यम् अकुतोभयम् ॥
मत्स्यो विराटो बलवान् अभिरक्षेत् स पाण्डवान् ॥
धर्मशीलो वदान्यश् च वृद्धश् च सुमहाधनः ॥
विराटनगरे तात संवत्सरम् इमं वयम् ॥
कुर्वन्तस् तस्य कर्माणि विहरिष्याम भारत ॥
यानि यानि च कर्माणि तस्य शक्ष्यामहे वयम् ॥
कर्तुं यो यत् स तत् कर्म ब्रवीतु कुरुनन्दनाः ॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
evam etan mahābāho yathā sa bhagavān prabhuḥ ||
abravīt sarvabhūteśas tat tathā na tad anyathā ||
avaśyaṃ tv eva vāsārthaṃ ramaṇīyaṃ śivaṃ sukham ||
saṃmantrya sahitaiḥ sarvair draṣṭavyam akutobhayam ||
matsyo virāṭo balavān abhirakṣet sa pāṇḍavān ||
dharmaśīlo vadānyaś ca vṛddhaś ca sumahādhanaḥ ||
virāṭanagare tāta saṃvatsaram imaṃ vayam ||
kurvantas tasya karmāṇi vihariṣyāma bhārata ||
yāni yāni ca karmāṇi tasya śakṣyāmahe vayam ||
kartuṃ yo yat sa tat karma bravītu kurunandanāḥ ||
Yudhishthira said: "It is so, mighty-armed one, as the blessed lord, master of all beings, said -- that is true and not otherwise. But for our stay we must certainly, having consulted together, choose a place that is pleasant, auspicious, comfortable, and free from danger. Virata, the strong king of the Matsyas, will be able to protect the Pandavas: he is devoted to dharma, generous, old, and greatly wealthy. In the city of Virata, dear one, we shall spend this year performing his tasks. Let each of you, descendants of Kuru, say what task he will be able to perform for him."
