Vaishampayana said: "Then the king of the Trigartas, Susharman, leader of chariot squadrons, spoke this word whose time had come, and spoke it in haste. Before this he had often been humbled by the Matsyas together with the Salveyakas, and again and again by Kichaka, the charioteer's son who served Matsya. Sorely oppressed together with his kinsmen by that powerful man, O lord, he looked toward Karna and said to Duryodhana: 'More than once the king of the Matsyas has oppressed my kingdom by his might. Before this his foremost strength was the mighty Kichaka — cruel, wrathful, evil-natured, famed on earth for his valor. That sinner, cruel and given to evil deeds, has now been slain there by the Gandharvas. Now that he is slain, O king, Virata, I believe, will be left without pride and without support, his spirit broken. If it please you, blameless one, and all the Kauravas, and the great-souled Karna, I consider this the moment for a campaign. I think this matter has come at the right time — it is urgent and it serves us well. Let us march swiftly upon his kingdom, rich in grain. Let us take his jewels and his various treasures, or divide his villages and provinces among ourselves. Or, forcing his city by strength, let us carry off many splendid herds of cattle. Joined with the Kauravas and the Trigartas, lord of the people, let us together swiftly seize his cows. Or, making a treaty with him, let us bind his manhood; or, destroying his whole army, let us bring him under our power. Having justly subdued him, we shall live at ease, and your strength will grow beyond doubt.'"

Susharman sees in Kichaka's death not the removal of a villain but Matsya's weakness. Political calculation turns even a just punishment into a pretext for attack.
