"Today I will repay to the son of Dhritarashtra the inexhaustible debt I promised long ago in words, by slaying Arjuna in battle. Let it be seen how, in the sky, the shafts of arrows move, severed in mid-flight and scattering like locusts. I will torment Partha with arrows whose touch is like Indra's thunderbolt and whose brilliance equals Mahendra's, as one torments an elephant with torches. That fire of the Pandava, hard to overcome, fueled by swords, spears and arrows, blazing and as if consuming its enemies -- I will extinguish it with a great cloud whose leading wind is the speed of horses, whose thunder is the rumble of chariots, and whose streams are arrows. Let the arrows loosed from my bow, like venomous serpents, creep toward Partha as serpents creep toward an anthill. Relying on the weapon I received from Jamadagnya, greatest of sages, and on my own valor, I could fight even Vasava himself. Let the monkey standing at the top of his banner, struck today by my broad-headed arrow, fall to the ground crying out fearsome cries. Let the clamor of the creatures dwelling on the enemy's banner, scattering to the four directions, rise up to heaven. Today I will tear out, root and all, the thorn long lodged in Duryodhana's heart, by hurling Bibhatsu down from his chariot. Let the Kauravas today see Partha -- his horses slain, his chariot gone, his manhood his last remaining support -- gasping like a serpent. Let the Kurus, if they wish, depart, taking only their wealth, or else stand upon their chariots and watch my battle."

Karna calls his loyalty a debt owed to Duryodhana. But a debt rooted in envy and old resentment easily becomes fuel for a ruinous decision.
