Kripa said: 'Radheya, your mind is always too fierce in battle. You do not understand the nature of true aims, nor do you consider their consequences. There are many strategies devised on the authority of the shastras, but the sages of old declare that war is the most sinful among them. War joined to the right place and time can yield victory; that same war, waged at the wrong time, bears no fruit. Valor shown in the right place and time is ordained for good; let the occasion for action be arranged according to what is favorable. The wise do not undertake to bear the burden of a charioteer.'

Kripa does not deny the kshatriya's duty, but sets it a measure: place, time, consequence. Without this measure, courage becomes mere cruelty.
