"Vidura said: 'Even when unasked, one should speak the truth, whether good or bad, hateful or pleasant, to one whose defeat one does not wish. Therefore I shall speak, O king, of what is for the good of the Kurus. I shall say what is both beneficial and in accord with virtue. Listen to me. Do not fix your mind, O Bharata, on means of achieving success that are unjust and improper. A man of intelligence should not grieve if some goal escapes him despite the application of just and proper means.'"

The fragment 5.34.6-10 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: an effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
