— the attainment of bliss in the higher spheres of the life to come. By virtue of his capacity to comprehend that Truth (Brahman) from which sacrifices proceed, the yogin is able to perform sacrifice with the mind. Another performs sacrifice with Words (Japa), and yet another with Work. Truth (Brahman) dwells in one who knows Brahman as endowed with qualities. More fully does it dwell in one who knows Brahman devoid of qualities. Hear yet something more from me. This lofty and celebrated philosophy ought to be taught to disciples. All other systems are but a collection of words. This entire universe rests upon this philosophy of yoga. Those acquainted with it are not subject to death. O king, it is impossible, by Work however excellent, to attain the Truth (Brahman). A man devoid of knowledge, even if he pours the oblations of homa or performs sacrifices, can never, O king, attain immortality (liberation) through Work.

This passage (5.45.21–25) carries forward the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds already against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Dharma here reveals itself through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through fidelity to one's word, and through the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
