O Bharata, pondering on this day and night, I am wretched and cannot sleep, out of anxiety for the welfare of the Kauravas. Terrible destruction is about to befall the Kurus unless peace, and nothing else, puts an end to this quarrel. I am for peace with the Parthas, not for war. O child, I have always held the Pandavas to be mightier than the Kurus.'

This passage (5.60.26-29) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: Sanjaya. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of envoys, fidelity to promises, and the kings' responsibility for the consequences of their decisions.
