Narada said: 'Thus addressed, the great-minded Vishvamitra was answered by Galava, who was so full of anxiety that he could neither sit, nor lie down, nor take food. Prey to worry and regret, bitterly lamenting and burning with remorse, Galava grew pale and was reduced to a skeleton. And overwhelmed with grief, O Suyodhana, he gave himself up to these lamentations: "Where shall I find wealthy friends? Where shall I find money? Do I have any savings at all? Where shall I find eight hundred horses white as the moon? What pleasure can I take in food? What happiness can I find in the objects of enjoyment? The very love of life has gone out of me. What use do I have for life?"'

The passage 5.107.1-5 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace is already unfolding against the backdrop of an inevitable war. A key theme is dharma. Here dharma is disclosed through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to one's promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
