Here dharma, truth, and deed are all discerned. This, O best of the twice-born, is the fate of one who ruins himself through his own actions. This is that path, O best of the twice-born, which everyone must take; but chosen in ignorance, it does not lead to happiness. Many thousands of Nairritas, O bull among the twice-born, born hostile, must here be beheld by those unpurified in soul. Here, in the groves of Mandara and in the dwellings of the brahmin sages, the gandharvas sing songs, O brahmin, that steal away mind and reason. Here Raivata, having heard the samans sung in verses, went to the forest, having lost his wife, his ministers, and his kingdom.

The passage 5.107.6-10 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace is already unfolding against the backdrop of an inevitable war. A key theme is dharma. Here dharma is disclosed through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to one's promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
