अथैत्य पुरुषः कश् चित् क्षीणपुण्यनिपातकः ॥
ययातिम् अब्रवीद् राजन् देवराजस्य शासनात् ॥
अतीव मदमत्तस् त्वं न कं चिन् नावमन्यसे ॥
मानेन भ्रष्टः स्वर्गस् ते नार्हस् त्वं पार्थिवात्मज ॥
न च प्रज्ञायसे गच्छ पतस्वेति तम् अब्रवीत् ॥
पतेयं सत्स्व् इति वचस् त्रिर् उक्त्वा नहुषात्मजः ॥
पतिष्यंश् चिन्तयाम् आस गतिं गतिमतां वरः ॥
एतस्मिन्न् एव काले तु नैमिषे पार्थिवर्षभान् ॥
चतुरो ऽपश्यत नृपस् तेषां मध्ये पपात सः ॥
प्रतर्दनो वसुमनाः शिबिरौशीनरो ऽष्टकः ॥
वाजपेयेन यज्ञेन तर्पयन्ति सुरेश्वरम् ॥

yayātim abravīd rājan devarājasya śāsanāt ||
atīva madamattas tvaṃ na kaṃ cin nāvamanyase ||
mānena bhraṣṭaḥ svargas te nārhas tvaṃ pārthivātmaja ||
na ca prajñāyase gaccha patasveti tam abravīt ||
pateyaṃ satsv iti vacas trir uktvā nahuṣātmajaḥ ||
patiṣyaṃś cintayām āsa gatiṃ gatimatāṃ varaḥ ||
etasminn eva kāle tu naimiṣe pārthivarṣabhān ||
caturo 'paśyata nṛpas teṣāṃ madhye papāta saḥ ||
pratardano vasumanāḥ śibirauśīnaro 'ṣṭakaḥ ||
vājapeyena yajñena tarpayanti sureśvaram ||
"Then a certain man, one who casts down those whose merit is spent, approached Yayati and said to him, O king, by the command of the king of the gods: 'You are exceedingly intoxicated with pride and hold no one worthy of regard. By your arrogance heaven is lost to you; you do not deserve it, O son of an earthly lord. You are no longer recognized. Go, fall!' Hearing this, the son of Nahusha said three times: 'May I fall among the worthy,' and, as he fell, the foremost of those who know the path began to reflect on his refuge. At that very moment, in the Naimisha forest, the king beheld four bulls among kings and fell in their midst: Pratardana, Vasumanas, Shibi Aushinara, and Ashtaka, who were satisfying the lord of the gods with the Vajapeya sacrifice."
