"Inhaling the sacrificial smoke of theirs, which stood before the gate of heaven, Yayati fell toward the earth. The lord of the world clung to the smoky river joining earth and heaven, flowing like the Ganga. The king fell in the midst of four glorious kinsmen, fresh from their finest post-sacrificial ablutions, resembling the guardians of the world, in the midst of four kings who were like lions and great fires, as if themselves oblations offered; so the royal sage Yayati fell as his merit ran out. All those kings said to him, as though to an image of Shri herself: 'Who are you? Whose kinsman are you? From what land or city?'"

The sacrificial smoke becomes for Yayati a link between heaven and earth. He falls not into emptiness but into the space of his descendants' sacrificial dharma. The kinship here is not merely biological: Madhavi's sons are bearers of accumulated merit.
