प्रियाभावाच् च पुरुषो नैव प्राप्नोति शोभनम् ॥
ध्रुवं चाभावम् अभ्येति गत्वा गङ्गेव सागरम् ॥
पुत्र उवाच
नेयं मतिस् त्वया वाच्या मातः पुत्रे विशेषतः ॥
कारुण्यम् एवात्र पश्य भूत्वेह जडमूकवत् ॥
मातोवाच
अतो मे भूयसी नन्दिर् यद् एवम् अनुपश्यसि ॥
चोद्यं मां चोदयस्य् एतद् भृशं वै चोदयामि ते ॥
अथ त्वां पूजयिष्यामि हत्वा वै सर्वसैन्धवान् ॥
अहं पश्यामि विजयं कृत्स्नं भाविनम् एव ते ॥
पुत्र उवाच
अकोशस्यासहायस्य कुतः स्विद् विजयो मम ॥
इत्य् अवस्थां विदित्वेमाम् आत्मनात्मनि दारुणाम् ॥
राज्याद् भावो निवृत्तो मे त्रिदिवाद् इव दुष्कृतेः ॥
priyābhāvāc ca puruṣo naiva prāpnoti śobhanam ||
dhruvaṃ cābhāvam abhyeti gatvā gaṅgeva sāgaram ||
putra uvāca
neyaṃ matis tvayā vācyā mātaḥ putre viśeṣataḥ ||

ato me bhūyasī nandir yad evam anupaśyasi ||
codyaṃ māṃ codayasy etad bhṛśaṃ vai codayāmi te ||
atha tvāṃ pūjayiṣyāmi hatvā vai sarvasaindhavān ||
ahaṃ paśyāmi vijayaṃ kṛtsnaṃ bhāvinam eva te ||
putra uvāca
akośasyāsahāyasya kutaḥ svid vijayo mama ||
ity avasthāṃ viditvemām ātmanātmani dāruṇām ||
rājyād bhāvo nivṛtto me tridivād iva duṣkṛteḥ ||
"For want of what is dear, a man attains nothing good and inevitably comes to nothing, as the Ganga, having flowed on, comes to the ocean." The son said: "Mother, such thoughts should not be spoken to a son, least of all by you. Show only pity here — become, as it were, dull and mute." The mother said: "My joy is all the greater for your seeing it thus: by this very urging you urge me on, and I urge you strongly in return. When you have slain all the Saindhavas, I will honor you; I foresee your complete and coming victory." The son said: "How, then, can victory be mine, when I have neither treasury nor allies? Having understood this grievous condition within my own mind, I have turned away from hope of the kingdom, as a sinner turns away from the third heaven."
