'When the time came, the aged and finest of kings ordered, according to the rules, that all things needed for the consecration be prepared, along with every auspicious rite. But the brahmanas, the elders, and all the townsfolk together with the people of the countryside opposed the consecration of Devapi. Hearing that the consecration had been halted, the king, his throat choked with tears, began to grieve for his son. Devapi was generous, knew dharma, was faithful to truth, and dear to his subjects, but he was afflicted by a defect of the skin. "The gods do not favor a protector of the earth whose body is impaired" — so saying, the finest of the twice-born set aside the excellent king.'

Dhritarashtra proves to Duryodhana the Pandavas' right not through abstract morality but through examples from their own family history. Seniority by itself does not confer power when dharma, the capacity to rule, and the consent of elders have been violated; legitimate succession belongs to the one who unites rightful claim with the qualities of a ruler.
