संजय उवाच
दुर्योधनस्य तद् वाक्यं निशम्य भरतर्षभः ॥
नेत्राभ्याम् अतिताम्राभ्यां कैतव्यं समुदैक्षत ॥
स केशवम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य गुडाकेशो महायशाः ॥
अभ्यभाषत कैतव्यं प्रगृह्य विपुलं भुजम् ॥
स्ववीर्यं यः समाश्रित्य समाह्वयति वै परान् ॥
अभीतः पूरयञ् शक्तिं स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥
परवीर्यं समाश्रित्य यः समाह्वयते परान् ॥
क्षत्रबन्धुर् अशक्तत्वाल् लोके स पुरुषाधमः ॥
स त्वं परेषां वीर्येण मन्यसे वीर्यम् आत्मनः ॥
स्वयं कापुरुषो मूढः परांश् च क्षेप्तुम् इच्छसि ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
duryodhanasya tad vākyaṃ niśamya bharatarṣabhaḥ ||
netrābhyām atitāmrābhyāṃ kaitavyaṃ samudaikṣata ||
sa keśavam abhiprekṣya guḍākeśo mahāyaśāḥ ||
abhyabhāṣata kaitavyaṃ pragṛhya vipulaṃ bhujam ||
svavīryaṃ yaḥ samāśritya samāhvayati vai parān ||
abhītaḥ pūrayañ śaktiṃ sa vai puruṣa ucyate ||
paravīryaṃ samāśritya yaḥ samāhvayate parān ||
kṣatrabandhur aśaktatvāl loke sa puruṣādhamaḥ ||
sa tvaṃ pareṣāṃ vīryeṇa manyase vīryam ātmanaḥ ||
svayaṃ kāpuruṣo mūḍhaḥ parāṃś ca kṣeptum icchasi ||
Sanjaya said: Having heard these words of Duryodhana, the best of the Bharatas looked at the son of Kitava with eyes turned deeply red. Then the glorious Gudakesha, gazing at Keshava and raising his broad arm, addressed the son of Kitava: "He who, relying on his own strength, challenges others and fearlessly exerts his own power — he is called a man. But he who challenges others while relying on another's strength is, through his own incapacity, merely a kinsman of kshatriyas and the lowest of men. So it is with you: you take the strength of others for your own; you yourself, O fool, are a coward, and yet you wish to insult others."
