"When I am enraged, with Vasudeva at my side, O lord of men, by what reason, O fool, could you still hold hope for life or kingdom? When Bhishma is struck down, Drona is stilled, and the son of the suta is felled, you will lose all hope for life, kingdom, and sons. Having seen the death of your brothers and sons, O Suyodhana, struck down yourself by Bhimasena, you will remember your evil deeds. Keshava will not make a second vow; I speak the truth, and all of this shall come to pass." Having said this, Uluka, the son of Kitava, took these words to heart, and having been given leave, returned the way he had come.

Arjuna answers not on the level of insult but on the level of the kshatriya standard: a man relies on his own strength, not on hiding behind another's. His decisive blow strikes at the very foundation of Duryodhana's confidence: Bhishma, on whose might that confidence rests, will fall first. After the words of Krishna and Arjuna, war becomes an inevitable morning's business, and the order to stand ready already sounds like the opening of battle.
