इष्वस्त्रं मम बालस्य भवतैव चतुर्विधम् ॥
उपदिष्टं महाबाहो शिष्यो ऽस्मि तव भार्गव ॥
ततो माम् अब्रवीद् रामः क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ॥
जानीषे मां गुरुं भीष्म न चेमां प्रतिगृह्णसे ॥
सुतां काश्यस्य कौरव्य मत्प्रियार्थं महीपते ॥
न हि ते विद्यते शान्तिर् अन्यथा कुरुनन्दन ॥
गृहाणेमां महाबाहो रक्षस्व कुलम् आत्मनः ॥
त्वया विभ्रंशिता हीयं भर्तारं नाभिगच्छति ॥
तथा ब्रुवन्तं तम् अहं रामं परपुरंजयम् ॥
नैतद् एवं पुनर् भावि ब्रह्मर्षे किं श्रमेण ते ॥
गुरुत्वं त्वयि संप्रेक्ष्य जामदग्न्य पुरातनम् ॥
प्रसादये त्वां भगवंस् त्यक्तैषा हि पुरा मया ॥

upadiṣṭaṃ mahābāho śiṣyo 'smi tava bhārgava ||
tato mām abravīd rāmaḥ krodhasaṃraktalocanaḥ ||

sutāṃ kāśyasya kauravya matpriyārthaṃ mahīpate ||
na hi te vidyate śāntir anyathā kurunandana ||
gṛhāṇemāṃ mahābāho rakṣasva kulam ātmanaḥ ||
tvayā vibhraṃśitā hīyaṃ bhartāraṃ nābhigacchati ||
tathā bruvantaṃ tam ahaṃ rāmaṃ parapuraṃjayam ||
naitad evaṃ punar bhāvi brahmarṣe kiṃ śrameṇa te ||
gurutvaṃ tvayi saṃprekṣya jāmadagnya purātanam ||
prasādaye tvāṃ bhagavaṃs tyaktaiṣā hi purā mayā ||
'It was you yourself, O mighty-armed one, who taught me the fourfold art of the bow and weapons when I was a boy. I am your disciple, O Bhargava.' Then Rama, his eyes reddened with anger, said to me: 'Bhishma, you acknowledge me as your teacher, yet you will not accept this daughter of the king of Kashi for what pleases me, O Kauravya, O lord of the earth. There is no peace for you otherwise, O descendant of Kuru. Accept her, O mighty-armed one, and preserve your own lineage. This woman, thrown off by you, cannot obtain a husband.' To this Rama, conqueror of foreign cities, who spoke thus, I said: 'This will not happen again, O brahmarshi. What use is your effort? O son of Jamadagni, taking into account your ancient status as my teacher, I beg your grace, O venerable one: this woman was already released by me before.'

Here the clash between Rama Jamadagnya and Bhishma turns from negotiation to an inescapable duel. Rama demands that Bhishma undo the consequences of Amba's forced abduction, but Bhishma answers with his own kshatriya dharma: he cannot hand over a woman whose heart already belongs to another. The dispute becomes a dispute between two vows. Rama stands for refuge and the defense of the wronged; Bhishma stands for his own understanding of royal duty and the purity of his line. Both therefore speak the language of dharma, yet their obligations collide head-on in a conflict that no single speech can now resolve.
