एवं गते ऽपि तु मया यच् छक्यं भृगुनन्दन ॥
तत् करिष्ये कुरुक्षेत्रे योत्स्ये विप्र त्वया सह ॥
द्वंद्वे राम यथेष्टं ते सज्जो भव महामुने ॥
तत्र त्वं निहतो राम मया शरशताचितः ॥
लप्स्यसे निर्जितांल् लोकाञ् शस्त्रपूतो महारणे ॥
स गच्छ विनिवर्तस्व कुरुक्षेत्रं रणप्रिय ॥
तत्रैष्यामि महाबाहो युद्धाय त्वां तपोधन ॥
अपि यत्र त्वया राम कृतं शौचं पुरा पितुः ॥
तत्राहम् अपि हत्वा त्वां शौचं कर्तास्मि भार्गव ॥
तत्र गच्छस्व राम त्वं त्वरितं युद्धदुर्मद ॥
व्यपनेष्यामि ते दर्पं पौराणं ब्राह्मणब्रुव ॥

api yatra tvayā rāma kṛtaṃ śaucaṃ purā pituḥ ||
tatrāham api hatvā tvāṃ śaucaṃ kartāsmi bhārgava ||
tatra gacchasva rāma tvaṃ tvaritaṃ yuddhadurmada ||
vyapaneṣyāmi te darpaṃ paurāṇaṃ brāhmaṇabruva ||
'Even though matters have come to this, O descendant of Bhrigu, I will do what is possible: I will fight you at Kurukshetra, O brahmin. O Rama, in single combat, as you wish, be ready, O great sage. There, slain by me and covered with hundreds of arrows, you, purified by weapons in the great battle, will attain the conquered worlds. Go then, turn back toward Kurukshetra, O lover of battle. O mighty-armed one, O treasure of austerity, I will come there to meet you in combat. O Rama, where you once performed the purification rite for your father, there I too, having slain you, will perform the purification rite, O Bhargava. Go there quickly, O Rama, maddened with battle. I will destroy your age-old pride, O one who merely calls himself a brahmin.'

Here the clash between Rama Jamadagnya and Bhishma turns from negotiation to an inescapable duel. Rama demands that Bhishma undo the consequences of Amba's forced abduction, but Bhishma answers with his own kshatriya dharma: he cannot hand over a woman whose heart already belongs to another. The dispute becomes a dispute between two vows. Rama stands for refuge and the defense of the wronged; Bhishma stands for his own understanding of royal duty and the purity of his line. Both therefore speak the language of dharma, yet their obligations collide head-on in a conflict that no single speech can now resolve.
