ततो माम् अपयातं वै भृशं विद्धम् अचेतसम् ॥
रामस्यानुचरा हृष्टाः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा प्रचुक्रुशुः ॥
अकृतव्रणप्रभृतयः काशिकन्या च भारत ॥
ततस् तु लब्धसंज्ञो ऽहं ज्ञात्वा सूतम् अथाब्रुवम् ॥
याहि सूत यतो रामः सज्जो ऽहं गतवेदनः ॥
ततो माम् अवहत् सूतो हयैः परमशोभितैः ॥
नृत्यद्भिर् इव कौरव्य मारुतप्रतिमैर् गतौ ॥
ततो ऽहं रामम् आसाद्य बाणजालेन कौरव ॥
अवाकिरं सुसंरब्धः संरब्धं विजिगीषया ॥
तान् आपतत एवासौ रामो बाणान् अजिह्मगान् ॥
बाणैर् एवाच्छिनत् तूर्णम् एकैकं त्रिभिर् आहवे ॥

avākiraṃ susaṃrabdhaḥ saṃrabdhaṃ vijigīṣayā ||
tān āpatata evāsau rāmo bāṇān ajihmagān ||
bāṇair evācchinat tūrṇam ekaikaṃ tribhir āhave ||
When Rama's companions, beginning with Akritavrana, and the princess of Kashi saw me being carried off, severely pierced and unconscious, they all cried out with joy, O Bharata. Then, having regained my senses, I understood what was happening and said to the charioteer: 'Drive to where Rama is. I am ready, and I no longer feel any pain.' The charioteer then drove me forward with magnificent horses, as though dancing, O Kauravya, and swift as the wind. Drawing near to Rama, I, furious and desiring victory, showered him with a net of arrows, he too being enraged. But Rama swiftly cut down, in that battle, each of my straight hurtling arrows with three of his own.

The close of day again halts the battle, like a boundary reminding us that even the sternest kshatriya resolve must have a limit.
