Thus all my well-sharpened arrows were crushed, cut in two by the hundred in that great battle by Rama's arrows. Then I again loosed at Rama, son of Jamadagni, a brightly blazing shaft, like death itself, wishing to strike him dead. Severely struck by it and overcome by the force of that cutting arrow, Rama suddenly lost consciousness and fell to the ground. When Rama lay upon the earth, the whole world, O Bharata, raised a cry of horror and shuddered, as though the sun had fallen. Then all the deeply shaken ascetics and the princess of Kashi rushed at once to that descendant of Bhrigu.

This chapter continues to unfold the double nature of this duel: outwardly a contest between two unsurpassed warriors, but inwardly a test of the capacity to remember dharma amid the fury of battle. Bhishma bows to Rama once more before standing against him, showing that reverence for one's teacher does not vanish even in combat. The exchange of astras raises the fight to a cosmic scale: the sky is closed over with arrows, fire arises, the world shudders at Rama's fall. Yet behind this power lies a troubling truth: when knowledge and vow are turned into weapons, nature itself answers with turmoil. The close of day again halts the battle, like a boundary reminding us that even the sternest kshatriya resolve must have a limit.
