ततः शिखण्डी तत् सर्वम् अखिलेन न्यवेदयत् ॥
तस्मै यक्षप्रधानाय स्थूणाकर्णाय भारत ॥
आपन्नो मे पिता यक्ष नचिराद् विनशिष्यति ॥
अभियास्यति संक्रुद्धो दशार्णाधिपतिर् हि तम् ॥
महाबलो महोत्साहः स हेमकवचो नृपः ॥
तस्माद् रक्षस्व मां यक्ष पितरं मातरं च मे ॥
प्रतिज्ञातो हि भवता दुःखप्रतिनयो मम ॥
भवेयं पुरुषो यक्ष त्वत्प्रसादाद् अनिन्दितः ॥
यावद् एव स राजा वै नोपयाति पुरं मम ॥
तावद् एव महायक्ष प्रसादं कुरु गुह्यक ॥
tataḥ śikhaṇḍī tat sarvam akhilena nyavedayat ||
tasmai yakṣapradhānāya sthūṇākarṇāya bhārata ||
āpanno me pitā yakṣa nacirād vinaśiṣyati ||
abhiyāsyati saṃkruddho daśārṇādhipatir hi tam ||
mahābalo mahotsāhaḥ sa hemakavaco nṛpaḥ ||
tasmād rakṣasva māṃ yakṣa pitaraṃ mātaraṃ ca me ||
pratijñāto hi bhavatā duḥkhapratinayo mama ||
bhaveyaṃ puruṣo yakṣa tvatprasādād aninditaḥ ||
yāvad eva sa rājā vai nopayāti puraṃ mama ||
tāvad eva mahāyakṣa prasādaṃ kuru guhyaka ||
Then Shikhandin told the chief of the yakshas, Sthunakarna, everything in full, O Bharata: 'O yaksha, my father has fallen into danger and will soon perish. The enraged lord of Dashārna will march against him — that king, mighty, full of great vigor, clad in golden armor. Therefore protect me, O yaksha, and my father and mother. For you have promised to remove my sorrow. O yaksha, may I become, by your grace, a man beyond reproach. O great yaksha, until that king has yet to reach my city, grant me your favor at least until that time, O guhyaka.'

This chapter turns Shikhandin's secret from a palace anxiety into a personal feat. The mother reveals the truth to Drupada: the lie arose from the fear of childlessness and rival wives, but it held only because of faith in Shiva's word. Drupada tries to join two levels of action — the human defense of the city and worship of the gods. Shikhandini, for her part, takes her parents' suffering upon herself and goes into the forest, where the possibility of a change of sex arises through a yaksha's grace. Amba's fate here becomes not an abstract curse but a concrete movement of compassion, shame, vow, and superhuman help.
