"Resting on Bhishma's prowess, my mighty son gave no thought to the Pandavas; how then was he struck down by his enemies? My father, bound by his great vow, was once wished for as an ally by the very gods together with Indra, when they were slaying the danavas — how did he fall? At the birth of this mighty son, Shantanu, benefactor of the world, cast off grief, sorrow and misery. How can you tell me that this refuge of wisdom, knower of the truth, devoted to true dharma, pure, versed in the essence of the Vedas and Vedangas, is slain? Having heard that the son of Shantanu, master of every weapon, restrained, calm and wise, has been struck down, I consider all our remaining strength already lost. It seems to me that adharma has grown stronger than dharma, since the Pandavas desire the kingdom after slaying their aged teacher. Once the unsurpassed Parashurama, knower of every weapon, rose up in battle for Amba's sake and was overcome by Bhishma in the fight. You tell me that this Bhishma, equal to Indra in deeds, the crown of all bowmen, is slain; what grief could be greater than this? Many times he had overcome hosts of kshatriyas, and even Rama, son of Jamadagni, the destroyer of enemy heroes. So surely Shikhandin, son of Drupada, must have surpassed that mighty Bhargava, terrible in battle, in splendor, valor and strength, if he struck down in battle this hero — skilled, versed in every science, knower of the highest weapons, the best of the Bharatas."

Dhritarashtra's grief is mixed with distorted judgment: he accuses the Pandavas of adharma, even though he had earlier admitted his own bad counsel. This is how attachment works: it sees Bhishma's greatness clearly, yet still tries to shift the cause of the catastrophe onto others.
