Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed Dhananjaya did just so: having quickly arrayed the troops, Phalguna advanced. Seeing that the Kurus had moved forward, the great army of the Pandavas appeared like the full, tranquil Ganga, flowing smoothly in its course. At their front stood Bhimasena, Dhrishtadyumna the son of Prishata, Nakula, Sahadeva, and valiant Dhrishtaketu. Behind, King Yudhishthira, surrounded by his akshauhini, together with his brothers and sons, guarded the rear. The greatly resplendent sons of Madri were the guardians of Bhima's wheels; the swift sons of Draupadi together with Abhimanyu guarded the rear ranks. Dhrishtadyumna the Panchala, the great warrior, was their protector, together with the heroes of the army and the foremost charioteers, the Prabhadrakas. Shikhandin, guarded by Arjuna, advanced with resolve for the destruction of Bhishma, O bull of the Bharatas. Arjuna's rear was guarded by the great warrior Yuyudhana, while his wheels were protected by two Panchalas — Yudhamanyu and Uttamaujas.

The Pandava formation is described as a deliberate distribution of responsibility. Bhima leads the front, Yudhishthira holds the center and rear, and Arjuna protects Shikhandin for the decisive task against Bhishma. This is not mere military geometry but an order of trust among heroes.
